that must be fun.
There is nothing wrong with atheism, in fact, I think it is a sign of healthy criticism. Thankfully, over here there are few militant atheists, probably because there are also few militant Christians. It can be ascribed to a trend of polarisation more than anything else. One antagonises the other in the measure that they deem fit as a riposte. That is a vicious circle, and I don't think the US is going to break away from that anytime soon. I think the 'mutual respect' concept is a utopia, since both sides would claim their right and a major point of conflict will always be the evolution 'debate' in schools.
Neither side will yield in that field, and how will you achieve the 'mandatory' mutual respect goal then? Seperate schools? When that happened here in the Netherlands, that lead to what we know as 'verzuiling', the pillars of society, with the Protestants, Catholics, liberals etc. all living in completely seperated communities, away from each other, and we needed a damn hippie revolution to break out of it.
I say, let them fight amongst each other like they always have, and when you pick a side, don't pick a militant one because they'll slaughter each other in the end and we'll all be better off.
Well, yes, the militant atheism here is the direct result of fanatical christians throwing their weight around. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, right? Well, here we go, and we are none the better for it.
I don't think atheism or theism is healthy... I think they are largely neutral factors. What is healthy is reason, and what is unhealthy is irrationality and hostility toward others.
I don't think mutual respect is impossible, but if people keep saying it is and thinking like it is, then it will be impossible. It may not be something we'll ever achieve completely, but I do think we can co-exist peacefully with others on a general level. I'm not after a utopia, I just want to turn it into something other than a warzone. Racism, for example, will always exist: but on a general societal level, black and white relations here are much, much improved. I seek the same thing with this: mutual respect of other's beliefs. If you accept a defeatist attitude now, you've already lost. Of course some dicks will always rise up to destroy the peacefulness, but for society as a whole, it will be a vast improvement.
